2012 World Championships of Foosball Commentary and Summary of Results

The 2012 Tornado World Championship took place Labor day weekend. The $100,000 event was organized and directed by Independent Foosball Promotions (IFP)  Superstars from around the world collided at the Hilton DFW Lakes Executive Conference Center in Dallas, Texas. Tornado Foosball provided a copious amount of  top of the line, coin operated foosball tables. The new Tornado tables provided the perfect arenas for the table soccer battles of more than 300 players. The foosball video production team, Inside Foos was on hand to cover all the action. Free live video streaming was an incredible treat to the player unable to attend the event. Good resolution with limited buffering and jumps. Jim Steven's excellent commentary on the marquee match ups was the icing on the cake. The streaming provided a great preview of the exciting 5 disc Inside Foos coverage that is currently available for order.

Open Doubles was packed with the greatest players in the game teaming up. Robert Mares/ Tony Spredeman, Billy Pappas/ Brandon Moreland, Bobby Diaz/Ryan Moore, and Todd Loffredo/Frederic Collignon  were in attendance battling for the kings seat atop the winner's bracket. It was the surging team of Tom Yore and Terry Rue that became the dark horse of the event. The duo of Rue/Yore sliced through the stacked field stamping their mark on everyone's memory.

In the winners bracket final match, Yore/Rue appeared to be an unstoppable force. Terry Rue played near flawless technical goalie and blocked Collignon at an epic level. Tom Yore equally contributed to the win and was an offensive dynamo. Yore passed with careless abandon, executing at spectacular rate of completion. Tom shot his pull well on Loffredo causing the Loffredo/Collignon team to do some defensive switching. Collignon is known for having fast hands with an ultra fast race defense that has been known to brick Yore in the past. Undaunted by the past, Yore hammered each possession with world class accuracy and with speed unmatched by Collignon. The electrifying victory of Terry Rue and Tom Yore sent the 11 time Open Double Champions Collignon/Loffredo to the losers side of the bracket. Loffredo and Collignon regrouped overcoming two multiple world champion players, Tony Spredeman and Robert Mares to capture the loser bracket.

The teams of the Open Doubles finals were now decided and the match was set to began. Collignon and Loffredo made savvy adjustments for the Yore/Rue rematch. Unlike the winner's bracket final, Yore and Rue appeared flat and while Loffredo/Collignon were riding the momentum from winning the losers bracket final. Collignon/Loffredo took advantage of the situation winning the first set. The loss appeared to rekindle the desire of winners bracket winning team Your/Rue. Terry and Tom showed that they possessed great heart and regained their footing in the second set. The final match went back and forth. Culminating in a even battle until midway through the 5th game. Collignon and Loffredo saw the finish line and  sprinted to ahead 5-2 victory.  This marked the 12th Open Double victory for the duo and gave Collignon his first main Open event victory of the weekend.

IFP Pro Nathan Winter and excellent partner Audrey Moreland captured the winners bracket in Open Mixed. Nathan is a former USTSA Pro Master was once ranked in the top 5 players in the world. The current IFP system initiated massive resets nearly two years dropping Nathan and many other players down to the rank of Pro. Audrey is a talented multi-table player with multiple titles to her credit. She is married to Brandon Moreland and the couple just celebrated the recent birth of their first child. The team found chemistry. Nathan proved he still had top 5 talent and Audrey played great nets against the best in the game. Winter and Moreland went on a winning spree beating Collignon/Steward in the quarter finals; Ryan Moore and Amy powers in the semi finals of the winners bracket. These two upset wins were then followed up a victory over the great Todd Loffredo and partner Kristin Grogan. The event began to appear to be a Cinderella story in the making for Winter/Moreland.

Undaunted by the early loss at the hands of Winters/Moreland, Frederico Collignon and Joy Steward rallied back through the losers bracket. The veteran mixed championship duo won 5 matches in the losers bracket overcoming some of the biggest names in the game. Collignon/Steward beat  Gabriel/Bambenek,Spredeman/Cherry, Atha/Lasecka,Moore/Powers, and finally Lofferdo/Grogan in the losers bracket final. This brought Collignon/Steward full circle to face the team that put them in the loser's bracket. Collignon/Steward would face Moreland/Winters in the Open Mixed final. Frederic/Steward won the match in 2 set fashion adding another win for the teams and keeping Frederic's hopes of another triple alive.

In the first set of Open Singles, Ryan Moore stopped the momentum of roaring Belgium, Frederic Collignon. Moore, also a former Worlds Open Singles Champion, came out winning with 3 quick games. Serving up a rare first set shut out to Collignon. The one sided victory was over in a blistering time of just 22 minutes. Moore opted to take a break between sets. Collignon practiced for 10 minutes before or so before Ryan returned from the stands to warm up for the final set.

Collignon came out with a noticeably renewed drive and swagger. In the first game, Rico appeared to be playing more aggressive banging the table and showing a desire to step the intensity up. Moore stopped play after Rico made an illegal recoil. Referees were eventually called in. While the two players waited for the referees to arrive, there were some choice words exchanged. These two stars have been battling each across the globe in numerous international competitions on a variety of different tables. Both players have been victorious at different times. The rivalry was very apparent. Collignon began applying off mental pressure making some vocal stabs Moore. Ryan "Mind Games" Moore nicely shook off the conduct and won his 4th straight unanswered game of this Tornado Worlds final.

Collignon regrouped, winning the second game. The battle of the international foosball titans was on. Both players captured another game victory each to set up a fifth and final game. At stake was the coveted World title and the final gem in a possible sweep of the open events for Collignon. The fifth game started out as another nail biter at 1-1, then suddenly Collignon clamped down with 4 unanswered points. Frederico Collignon's victory over  Ryan Moore to clinch the Open Singles title sealed a unprecedented fifth triple victory of the main Open events.  This accomplishment adds even more character to the unparallelled watermark Collignon is leaving on the game of foosball.
